ISSE 2014 – Let’s build a trustworthy European IT security market

There should be more effort to build a strong and trustworthy IT security industry in Europe.

Opening the ISSE conference in Brussels, Norbert Pohlman, director of TeleTrust in Germany, said that the European strengths are high level of competence in security and data protection, with innnovative security solutions, extensive security research and high expertise and evaluation and an open crypto policy.

“Culturally we are in a good condition, with traditionally reliable IT security with no intended weakenesses and implementation of solutions,” he said. “Altogeher we are in good position to play an important role in the future of IT security.”

However considering the effect of threats and representation of crypto systems and recommendations of a real expert in this field, Pohlman said that we “have to use new systems”. He said we need “measurement to fulfill the effect” and called for the establishment of an IT security replacability space.

Talking about the benefits of replaceability, Pohlman said that market leaders can create more trustworthiness for their solutions with a local certification, and customers can decide what IT security technologies they want to use with that. “Europe has easy access to solutions, so this is a win win solution,” he said. “We will have the right level of trust in Europe and push IT security in Europe.”

He concluded by calling on market leaders in Europe to provide real standards to change from US to EU technology, and highlighted technologies such as encryption, separation technologies and tokens and high level security models as examples of how Europe can provide better solutions.
