9 Modern Ways You Can Use Bitcoin in 2025

Cryptocurrency is slowly becoming a regular way to pay for something, with new uses popping up every day. Many people choose Bitcoin, among others, because it’s easy to use, quick, secure, private, and more affordable than traditional methods.

1. Gaming, Virtual Worlds, and Entertainment

If you’re into gaming, Bitcoin is already part of the action, letting you buy in-game items, unlock premium content, and join exclusive online tournaments. Platforms like ZEBEDEE even pay small Bitcoin rewards during gameplay. Streamers on Twitch and YouTube also get tips through Lightning Network tools, and indie games use play-to-earn models that reward players in BTC.

For those who love to wager on their favourite teams—like football, basketball, or even esports—Bitcoin lets you place bets quickly, securely, and often with greater privacy than traditional methods. Gambling expert Vlad Grindu says gambling with Bitcoin is on the rise, and online casino platforms often have alternative methods available with multiple payment options, providing players with greater flexibility and convenience. Bitcoin makes the whole process smoother and easier compared to regular sportsbooks.

On metaverse platforms, Bitcoin-backed assets and NFTs are becoming common, turning your in-game work into real-world value.

2. Paying for Subscriptions and Streaming Services

While most subscription services like Netflix do not accept crypto directly, you can still use it to pay. Crypto debit cards from companies like Bybit, Coinbase, and BitPay let you top up your card with Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies. When you make a purchase, the card converts your crypto into fiat currency, like pounds or euros.

3. Booking Travel

Now you can travel the world with Bitcoin. Platforms like Travala let you book flights, hotels, and tours using crypto, while some Airbnb-style platforms offer discounts if you pay with Bitcoin.

You can easily top up your wallet or convert Bitcoin to local currency at Airport kiosks or through Binance P2P, making it easy to manage funds and avoid foreign exchange fees while travelling.

4. Shopping, Eating Out, and Everyday Transactions

Bitcoin can be used in multiple ways, including shopping, eating, and going about your day, just like a credit card. Point-of-sale systems are also catching up – thanks to companies like Square and Paxos, more physical stores can accept Bitcoin without hassle.

Big retailers like Whole Foods and Starbucks accept Bitcoin through services like BitPay or Strike. However, this option is only available at selected locations, including some stores in London.

Online Shopify stores offer seamless integration with Bitcoin payments, enabling businesses to accept cryptocurrencies alongside traditional payment methods.

5. Investing and Saving for the Future

More people are investing in Bitcoin, seeing it as a way to build wealth and protect their money from inflation, unlike traditional ways of investing. In December 2024, Bitcoin reached a record-breaking value of $108,000 (approximately £83,257.20), showing it’s a very popular investment.

In 2025, Bitcoin-based savings accounts are becoming increasingly popular, giving people the chance to earn interest on their Bitcoin holdings. The world of DeFi (Decentralized Finance), on the other hand, is growing at a rapid pace. With cross-chain platforms, Bitcoin now plays a role in lending, borrowing, and earning interest—all without using a traditional bank. Users have more control over their money, and DeFi is more transparent, with no middlemen, making it an essential part of the future of finance.

6. Sending and Receiving Money

Sending money globally is much faster, cheaper, and easier than ever before. With apps like Muun and Cash App, you can transfer Bitcoin through the Lightning Network in just a few taps, making it a convenient option for sending funds to family members abroad.

This method completely eliminates the delays and high fees often associated with traditional bank transfers or money services. For instance, the Lightning Network allows for near-instant transactions with minimal costs, making it the ideal solution to send small amounts of money quickly across the border. Additionally, the ease of use with mobile apps means that users don’t need to have a technically sound knowledge of crypto and blockchain technology.

7. Donating to Charities and Causes

More and more charities are embracing Bitcoin as a way for people to contribute. Charities like Save the Children and The Water Project now accept Bitcoin donations. Donors can easily track Bitcoin donations on the blockchain, allowing them to see exactly where their money is going, ensuring transparency and reassurance.

8. Getting Paid for Work or Content

Freelancers and remote workers now have plenty of options to get paid in Bitcoin. Platforms like LaborX and CryptoJobs specialise in crypto-friendly gigs, making it easy to find work that pays in Bitcoin.

Content creators are also jumping on the crypto bandwagon. With the help of the Lightning Network, writers, artists, musicians, and video creators can receive instant BTC payments directly from their fans—no third-party platforms taking a cut.

Smart contracts bring a new twist by letting creators set up automatic payments and share earnings fairly with their team. Creators have more control over their earnings and can reduce delays associated with traditional payment methods. Bitcoin offers a new way for creators to monetise their content while maintaining greater privacy and freedom, from small tips to larger payouts.

9. Keeping Your Privacy Online

If you prioritise anonymity while browsing the web or accessing sensitive content, you can use Bitcoin to subscribe to VPN services, keeping your details private. Many services like Mullvad and ProtonVPN now let you pay with Bitcoin, so you don’t have to share personal data.

You can also pay for encrypted email, cloud storage, and even private phone numbers with Bitcoin without sharing your identity, protecting your digital footprint. For example, ProtonMail offers end-to-end encryption for secure emails, and you can pay for its premium plans with Bitcoin, ensuring a fully anonymous sign-up process.
