A GCHQ spokesperson has welcomed the Government’s steps to enhance national cyber security, but admitted that there is growing concern around critical infrastructure.
The spokesperson, who was not named under the Chatham House rule, denied recent suggestions that cyber terrorism is becoming reality but did admit that critical infrastructure and financial services requires focus, saying it was of ‘grave’ concern on everything from brand reputation to the nation security as a whole.
He said that while it is clear that terrorism groups are technically-adept, there’s been no sign of them venturing to cyber beyond promotional purposes, and said that there doesn’t seem to be intent to use “destructive cyber capability”.However they did say that it sees commercial espionage on an “incredibly industrial” scale, and sometimes it’s state-sponsored sometimes it’s not he said.
