Facebook has admitted that it does track users who do not have Facebook accounts, but it added that it was due to a bug that is currently being fixed.
“The researchers did find a bug that may have sent cookies to some people when they weren’t on Facebook. This was not our intention – a fix for this is already under way,” Richard Allan, Facebook’s vice president of policy for Europe, wrote in response to a report.
Specifically addressing eight claims (some which did not appear in the report) Allan also noted that Facebook is transparent about its use of cookies for security, personalisation and ads, as well as a form of security, alerting users if their profile is being used at an unknown computer. The Belgian Privacy Commission is expected to decide whether to act on the report before the end of the month.
