We’ve seen some pretty dastardly ransomware pop up over the past couple of years. Popcorn Time decrypts your files for free if you pass the infection on to your friends. Jigsaw deletes some of your files every hour until you pay up. The Koolova ransomware put a whole new spin on things. Like Popcorn Time it will restore your encrypted files free of charge. The difference is that you don’t have to do anything illegal — or even questionable — to make that happen. All you have to do is read two articles about ransomware. Yes, really. Spotted by security researcher Michael Gillespie, Koolova appears to be a work in progress. BleepingComputer’s Lawrence Abrams had to set up a local web server on a test system in order to make the ransomware functional.
