Professor Peter Roberts, director of military sciences at the Royal United Services Institute, warned that Britain will struggle to cope with emerging threats without a massive increase in spending. Speaking ahead of a naval arms fair in Glasgow, he said the UK would need to invest 10 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) on defence over the next decade in order to catch up with Vladimir Putin’s Russia.
