The Online e-commerce platform Shopify experienced a security breach caused by two rogue employees who accessed customer transaction details from merchants on the site. Shopify has estimated that under 200 of their one million online stores were affected by the breach.
The breach is currently being investigated by the FBI and other law enforcement agencies alongside Shopify. Shopify has said that the breach was not due to vulnerability in their platform, but simply because of some untrustworthy, rogue employees. The investigation is currently in it’s early stages, but Shopify has said that they will alert customers and merchants of their findings when possible.
In a statement Shopify said, “we immediately terminated these individuals’ access to our Shopify network and referred the incident to law enforcement”. The statement continued to say that “our teams have been in close communication with affected merchants to help them navigate this issue and address any of their concerns. We don’t take these events lightly at Shopify. We have zero tolerance for platform abuse and will take action to preserve the confidence of our community and the integrity of our product.”
