Stony Brook University Hospital recently issued a warning to patients about a ransomware attacks which potentially exposed their personal data. Stony Brook University Hospital is the only tertiary care center and Regional Trauma Center in Long Island, and is just one of many recent hospitals to experience a data breach. The hospital contacted patients to inform them of the potential exposure of their details following the attack on the hospital’s third-party vendor Blackbaud.
Blackbaud is a fundraising and communication software typically used by universities, healthcare organisations, nonprofits and foundations worldwide. The incident too place in May 2020 but Stony Brook University Hopsital was notified on July 17 by Blackbaud that “patient information may have been involved in a security incident on Blackbaud’s systems.” Patients of the hospital have been notified that the data that was compromised from Blackbaud could have indluece their address, date of birth, name, contact information, insurance provider, medical service, and attending doctors.
