Cybersecurity Talent Crisis: Future Defenders Rise to the Challenge in CTF Showdown

The UK is facing a cybersecurity talent crisis, with nearly half (44%) of businesses struggling to find professionals equipped to combat the evolving cyber threat landscape, according to the UK Government’s Cyber Security Skills in the UK Labour Market 2024 report. In response, Check Point Software, a global leader in cybersecurity solutions, joined forces with the UK Cyber Team to help bridge the gap and nurture the next generation of cyber defenders.

On January 18, some of the country’s brightest cybersecurity hopefuls went head-to-head in a high-stakes Capture the Flag (CTF) challenge organised by the SANS Institute and the UK Government. More than just a competition, the event was a proving ground where participants demonstrated their ability to tackle real-world cyber threats, refining their technical skills in an environment designed to simulate the high-pressure reality of cyber defence.

“As cyberattacks grow more sophisticated, closing the cybersecurity skills gap is no longer optional—it’s a necessity,” said Mark Weir, Regional Director for the UK & Ireland at Check Point Software. “This event is about more than just competition; it’s about investing in the next generation of cyber defenders. By equipping them with the right training, mentorship, and opportunities, we are ensuring a more secure digital future for the UK.”

A High-Pressure Test of Cyber Skills

With the UK remaining a prime target for cybercriminals, the event underscored the importance of hands-on training in preparing the next wave of cyber professionals. Throughout the competition, participants generated a staggering 1.6TB of data while working through intricate security challenges that tested their expertise in threat detection, incident response, cryptography, and ethical hacking.

Beyond the technical challenges, teamwork and strategic thinking played a crucial role in the event’s outcome. Participants were required to collaborate under pressure, mimicking the real-world dynamics of cybersecurity response teams. The competition culminated in Team 2 emerging victorious, showcasing exceptional problem-solving and resilience.

“This event showcased not only the incredible talent within the UK but also the power of collaboration between government, academia, and industry,” said Steve Jones, Head of Programmes at SANS Institute. “Together, we can close the skills gap and secure our digital future.”

Beyond the Competition: A Launchpad for Cyber Careers

The event also served as a springboard for participants looking to turn their skills into careers in cybersecurity. Check Point Software provided exclusive insights into professional pathways, offering access to mentorship, training, and cutting-edge cybersecurity resources. Key highlights included:

  • Keynote: Staying Ahead of Cyber Threats: Muhammad Yahya Patel, Lead Security Engineer at Check Point’s Office of the CTO, introduced participants to ThreatCloud, a prevention-first cybersecurity platform, and shared guidance on careers in cyber threat intelligence and incident response.
  • Spotlight on SecureAcademy: Participants learned about Check Point’s SecureAcademy, a global initiative offering free cybersecurity training and certifications. Already integrated with leading universities, the programme has trained thousands of students worldwide.
  • Career Inspiration: Pauline Brusset, Associate Sales Engineer at Check Point Software, shared her personal journey into cybersecurity, highlighting the diverse and accessible career pathways in the industry.
The Future of Cyber Talent

For many competitors, the event marked just the beginning of their cybersecurity journeys. Some will now be considered for the UK Cyber Team, which will go on to represent the nation in international cybersecurity challenges later this year.

Reflecting on the event, Muhammad Yahya Patel said, “Sponsoring and participating in this event has been a privilege. The level of skill, creativity, and determination we witnessed was truly inspiring. The UK has an outstanding pool of cyber talent, and it’s essential that we provide them with the resources and pathways to turn that talent into meaningful careers.”

Check Point Software remains committed to addressing the cybersecurity skills gap through initiatives such as SecureAcademy, internships, and mentorship programmes. Events like the CTF challenge highlight the importance of industry collaboration in shaping the future cybersecurity workforce and ensuring the UK remains resilient against emerging cyber threats.
