To celebrate the Lord Mayor’s City Giving Day on Tuesday 27 September, MWR InfoSecurity will run one of its hugely popular ‘Capture the Flag’ challenges. MWR’s all-day event, hosted by J.P. Morgan, is designed to highlight solutions to the UK’s current cyber security skills gap and encourage engagement with this exciting industry. The event is open to everyone, including those not already working within the cyber security industry, and to help fill any gaps in participants’ knowledge MWR’s trainers will run informal “lightning training sessions,” offering an introduction to different core topics and tools.
Speaking about its involvement in this year’s Lord Mayor’s City Giving Day, Martyn Ruks, Technical Director of MWR said, “We’re really excited to be involved and wanted to offer something that is not only different to other activities being planned, but also raises awareness of the variety of roles offered by a career in cyber security. Our challenge will offer participants the opportunity to test their skills in the battle against cyber crime, which may be completely different to their current job role. Attendees will learn how to solve real-world cyber security challenges and gain an insight into the skills and capabilities needed to be successful in a cyber security role through fun and challenging exercises.”
Participants will be divided into teams based on their skill sets, allowing team members to share knowledge and help each other improve. In order to ensure that there is an even distribution of skills among the teams, MWR asks candidates to pre-register their interest in taking part: https://www.mwrinfosecurity.com/mwr-to-hold-charity-cyber-security-challenge-day
Martyn concludes, “Over the day, people will be presented with a number of technical challenges and logical puzzles, designed to help them practice and widen their problem solving and security skills. Our challenges have proven successful in achieving the objectives around skills development in previous events run by MWR, and will exercise the participants in technical cyber security skills, investigation skills, coding and scripting skills, problem solving, the translation between physical and cyber domains and ultimately collaboration, teamwork and leadership.”
Both MWR and J.P. Morgan are offering staff time to host the event with all proceeds from the day donated to The Rona Sailing Project and to the mental health charity Mind. A donation of £300 per participant is suggested, though any amount will be greatly appreciated. Refreshments and lunch will be provided.
