Cybersecurity has a wellbeing problem. One that we, at The IT Security Guru, won’t stop shouting about. We’ve all seen the stats: burnout runs rife throughout cybersecurity, there’s a retention issue, and a sizable skills gap. This, on top of the fact that threats are becoming more frequent in volume and more complex in make-up, creates the perfect storm for poor mental health outcomes among professionals to arise.
A distracted or overwhelmed mind is more susceptible to errors, potentially increasing vulnerability to cyberattacks. Fatigue and burnout can contribute to lapses in judgment, impacting the ability to identify and respond to threats effectively. Additionally, the capacity to manage stress and maintain mental resilience is paramount during incident response, where heightened pressure and time-sensitive decisions are commonplace.
The human element, specifically the wellbeing of cybersecurity practitioners, is increasingly recognised as a critical factor in overall security posture. Recognising the impact of stress and mental resilience on decision-making and operational effectiveness, a collaborative research initiative has been launched to investigate these crucial aspects.
The team behind productivity platform The Zensory have partnered with cybersecurity expert Holly Foxcroft in a groundbreaking, grassroots campaign that aims to move beyond anecdotal evidence and establish a data-driven understanding of the challenges faced by cybersecurity professionals. The core focus is on exploring the correlation between stress, fatigue, and cognitive function, and how these factors influence security outcomes.

The research seeks to address these concerns by gathering data on the following key areas:
- Proactive Threat Prevention: Understanding how stress and cognitive overload affect the ability to anticipate and prevent cyberattacks.
- Incident Response Effectiveness: Examining the impact of stress on the ability of teams to manage and resolve security incidents efficiently.
- Post-Incident Stress Mitigation: Investigating strategies to reduce the psychological impact of security breaches on individuals and teams.
- Phishing Vulnerability: Exploring the link between stress and increased susceptibility to phishing attacks.
This survey aims to collect valuable insights from cybersecurity professionals regarding their experiences with stress, fatigue, and their influence on decision-making. The data gathered will be instrumental in shaping the development of targeted interventions and support mechanisms. This tool aims to address the following:
- Stress and Burnout Reduction: Providing resources and strategies to mitigate the impact of stress and burnout on cybersecurity professionals.
- Improved Cognitive Function: Enhancing cognitive function to reduce susceptibility to phishing attacks and improve overall security posture.
- Incident Response Support: Offering tools and techniques to manage stress and maintain resilience during and after security incidents.
