As cyber threats continue to grow more advanced, the need to secure critical infrastructure has never been more urgent.
From manufacturing floors to hospital networks and public transportation systems, essential services face relentless pressure from increasingly sophisticated ransomware attacks, including those backed by nation-states. For cybersecurity expert Vinay Adavi, this is a personal mission as much as a professional challenge.
Closing The Security Gap
Vinay Adavi brings over 20 years of hands-on experience building networking and security products for some of the most prominent companies in the tech industry. But it was the wide cybersecurity disparity between tech-forward companies and non-technology sectors that caught his attention. Manufacturing plants and hospitals often run on legacy systems riddled with vulnerabilities.
Standard tools don’t work in these environments, and rigid regulatory controls slow the adoption of new technology.
Recognising the critical need to address this issue, Adavi co-founded Airgap Networks Inc. The company introduced agentless microsegmentation, a new approach designed specifically to secure environments where traditional agent-based methods fall short.
The solution gained traction quickly, helping hospitals, factories, and transportation systems build stronger defenses against cyber threats. Zscaler Inc. later acquired Airgap, integrating its technology to strengthen zero-trust security across critical infrastructure further.
The Mind Behind The Progress
Adavi’s resume is a masterclass in originality. With 18 granted patents and two more pending, his contributions have changed the way the cybersecurity world approaches network architecture. His ideas haven’t just advanced the field; they’ve reshaped it.
Raised in a small farming town in India without access to the internet, Adavi first went online at the age of 20. Through determination and a full scholarship, he became the first in his family to earn an engineering degree with honours. His career would eventually lead him to senior roles at VMware, Juniper, and now Zscaler, where he serves as Senior Director of Product Management.
Today, Adavi continues to build tools that combine AI with zero-trust principles, offering new ways to counter threats in real time. These aren’t just products, they’re practical solutions for real-world problems affecting millions.
Leading With Purpose And Persistence
Starting a cybersecurity company on an H1B visa was no easy feat. Adavi credits his co-founders, wife, and son for their unwavering support during the journey. Together, they built something impactful. Airgap Networks has been recognised with numerous Global InfoSec Awards, including honors for microsegmentation, OT security, remote work security, incident response, and zero-trust platforms.
But for Adavi, the work is far from over. His vision extends beyond accolades. He wants to simplify cybersecurity for everyone. He believes security and privacy should work in the background, protecting people without requiring constant worry or technical know-how.
Shaping the Future of Cybersecurity
As threats grow more complex, Adavi remains focused on building a safer future. He understands the high stakes facing critical infrastructure and continues to be a driving force behind the products designed to protect it.
By continuing his work in the cybersecurity field, Adavi aims to address the evolving challenges faced by critical infrastructure. His innovative approaches help ensure that these vital systems remain secure, resilient, and capable of withstanding the growing number of cyber threats targeting them.
In a world where digital threats continue to expand, Adavi stands out not just as a builder but as a protector of what matters most.
